We are well into January now, and many people around the world are diving headfirst into their New Year’s resolutions. Sadly, though, many people end up quitting on their resolution, only to be frustrated at themselves for not following through. Why do we do this to ourselves?
Heather Jackson is a professional in Project Management with a broad range of experiences. In her work as a Project Manager, she calls on her days as an Officer in the U.S. Army. Jackson’s free time is often spent volunteering in her community, traveling, and reading. She knows the value of hard work, and shares her tips for following through with your New Year’s resolution.
- Think about what your end-goal is, and add in smaller, achievable steps along the way. Do you want to read more? Perhaps your end-goal will be to read one book per month. However, start small and commit to reading for ten minutes every day. Once you have the hang of that, you can increase the amount slowly. This makes sure that you are developing habits without burning yourself out.
- Patience is key. Changing your behavior permanently takes a lot longer than you may think, so don’t be too hard on yourself.
- Forget about motivation. This is especially true if you have a health or fitness goal. A lot of times, you can’t wait around until you feel motivated, you just have to have the discipline to do it anyway.
